Quail Dobbs

“The Man in the Can” had a career that spanned 35 years at the most famous rodeos of the world, including Cheyenne Frontier Days™. His rodeo career began with riding bareback broncs and bulls. He discovered, however, that his talents lay elsewhere. At the age of 21, Dobbs jumped into a wooden pickle barrel to act as decoy at a rodeo in Buffalo, Minnesota. A star was born. He was a consummate entertainer, using the barrel as a prop, thrilling the crowd with his athletic agility. Quail continued to thrill Cheyenne audiences for 28 years as a barrelman for Cheyenne Frontier Days™. He never missed riding in a scheduled parade and clowning around with the children and people along the route. He is one of only three men to work the National Finals rodeo both as a barrelman and a bullfighter. Quail retired in 1998 and became a justice of the peace in Coahoma, TX, where he resides.
