Princess Blue Water

Rose Powell Nelson Ecoffey was born in 1880 to John Y. Nelson scout and friend of Buffalo Bill and Jenny Lone Wolf a Sioux from the Red Cloud family. It is said that she was named Princess Blue Water by Buffalo Bill Cody when she as a child and her family traveled with his Wild West Show. She was educated at the prestigious Franklin Institute and was an interpreter for those who did not speak English. A member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) tribe and a representative for the tribe at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ she and her troupe entertained visitors at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ for over forty years. Beginning in the late 1930s Princess Blue Water and her family have performed at the Indian Village and in the parades as well as in the arena.
