Willits A. Brewster
Willits Brewster was a long time volunteer at Cheyenne Frontier Days™. He joined the Indian Committee in 1946 and served as Indians Chairman in 1950 and 1953. In 1954, he became Tickets Chairman and was General Chairman from 1954 to 1955. As Chairman, he was instrumental in moving the chutes and east side stands closer, which not only allowed for the construction of a new stand but also shrank the size of the area. This increased the intensity of the rough stock performance and made for more corral space. He was part of the group that negotiated with the Canadian chuckwagon drivers to bring them to Cheyenne. He served several years on the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Planning Committee and was a key figure in building the masonry structure which now houses the CFD Old West Museum and the CFD Headquarters. For years after its construction, the building was known as “Brewster’s Folly”. Brewster became a HEEL in 1956 and served as timer at Chute 9 until his death in 1974. One of Willits favorite Cheyenne Frontier Days™ memories happened when picking up Princess Blue Water and Chief High eagle from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota for Frontier Days. As they were driving to Cheyenne, Chief High Eagle pointed to a Bluff and said in sign language “Saw a white man on horseback. Show him and scalped him.” Brewster, nervous he was going to be next, had to be reassured by Princess Blue Water that Chief High Eagle was not going to scalp him.
