Phil VanHorn

Phil Van Horn can be seen everywhere around Frontier Days, whether downtown at the Pancake Breakfasts, at the Buckle Club, or the Old West Museum. He started volunteering on the Security Committee in 1981 and has been an integral part of CFD ever since. Son Scott Van Horn said, "He likes the volunteer spirit of Cheyenne Frontier Days™, regardless of what capacity he is working. What appeals to him is the spirit of community." After volunteering on the Security Committee for 13 years he became Security Committee Chairman in 1991 until 1993. He was Cheyenne Frontier Days™ General Chairman from 1995 to 1997. He also served on the Board of Directors for Cheyenne Frontier Days™, the CFD Old West Museum and the Buckle Club. When asked about what he was most proud of during his CFD tenure, he replied; "During my terms on the board and as General Chairman, in addition to building C-stand and the much needed bathrooms underneath, we replaced all the remaining committee mobile home offices with attractive permanent buildings - Public Relations, Contestants, Ticket Committee, Security, Concessions. We utilized the opportunity of the 100th Cheyenne Frontier Days™ to improve the infrastructure and the appearance of the 83 acres, both for the visitors during the summer as well as the neighbors and residents who see the park year-round. Because of the revenues generated by the 99th, 100th, and 101st celebrations, we took the opportunity to pay for all these improvements with no debt. At the same time, we accelerated the payments on the debt for the new East Side grandstand completed in 1993." Phil was a founding member of the CFD Hall of Fame steering committee and has been Master of Ceremony for Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies. He presently sits on the CFD Scholarship Foundation and volunteers his time to many aspects of Cheyenne Frontier Days™. Scott Van Horn summed up his father's commitment to CFD by saying, "I would bet dollars to doughnuts that even if he hadn't been on the General Committee, he'd still be in the parking lots in his red shirt taking money."
