Dick Sherman
Born in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, Dick Sherman moved with his family to Cheyenne at the age of four and went on to have a life-long love affair with Wyoming. A graduate of Cheyenne Central High School and later from the University of Wyoming, (later honored as a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame), Dick served in the Vietnam War where he earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his return to Wyoming he served as the United States Property and Fiscal officer for the state. In the meantime, Dick took volunteering seriously and became involved at Cheyenne Frontier Days. In the Fall of 1990, Dick was serving as the
Night Show Chairman, was in Nashville watching young new talent for possible acts for the next Frontier Days. A young man impressed Sherman with his act so much that Dick approached the man's agent and secured a place for him in the 1991 show for $30,000. The artist's name was Garth Brooks. With his eye for good talent and his strong sense of stewardship, Dick Sherman grew the Night Show to undreamed of heights. As General Chairman some years later, his eye discerned the need to improve the park. The main focus of the improvements was the removal of the old "J" stand to make way for the new East stands CFD now enjoys. Despite setbacks, the new East Stand, along with its chutes and alleys, was complete by the 1993 show and with Dick's guidance the debt for the project was retired in 2001 as he was leaving the committee, in half the projected time anticipated. Not content to attend only to the stands, Dick also made sure that a new roof was put on the HEELS hangout and exhibition hall, as well as new upgrades made to the Grounds Committee Building. Always looking to the future, Dick was instrumental in the solvency of the CFD Scholarship Foundation. It is his dedication to CFD and his ability to organize and get things done that made many of the improvements to Cheyenne Frontier Days that have made the entire experience more enjoyable for all.
