Del Peterson
Del has volunteered for Cheyenne Frontier Days™ for 40 years on multiple committees. He was on the Parades Committee from 1981 to 1982 and the Indians Committee from 1983 to 1993, serving as its Chairman in his last three years. Del has served on the Public Relations Committee since 1995. He was a sponsor host for Copenhagen for 15 years and for Loaf ‘N Jug for 10 years. Del has volunteered to sell art for the last quarter century and for 15 of those years, served on the Art Show Committee itself. In addition, Del was on the CFD Old West Museum Board of Directors for two years and on the CFD Board of Directors from 2000 to 2005. He served as Chairman during that final year. He has been a member of the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Buckle Club since 1991 and the CFD HEELS since 1993. While on the Indians Committee, Del pioneered many changes to the Indian Village. In the late 1980s, the Indian Village only consisted of a grassy area surrounded by railroad ties in the southeast corner of Frontier Park. At that time, the Indian Village attracted around 400 visitors a day. Del saw possibilities for positive change and secured multiple grants from the Phillip Morris Company to fund improvements to the Indian Village. The changes prompted increased interest and attendance; vendor sales were enhanced and the Village became a more pleasant visitor experience. Del’s changes to the dance program format, including his addition of a flute player and storyteller, remain in effect today. While the Indian Village remains a free venue, its vendor and food operations continue to offer significant revenue to CFD, playing host to 4,500 visitors in 2019.
