David “Sammy” Mcinerney
David “Sammy” McInerney was a Cheyenne Frontier Days volunteer for over 65 years. He loved the build-up, preparation, and participating in the show. Sammy began his CFD career as a pick-up man for the Parades Committee in the early 1960s. Sammy never changed committees and therefore served under at least 17 different Parades Chairmen. Sammy cherished the relationships that he forged through CFD. He was elected to HEELS in 1972 and became a Silver HEEL in 2012. He was fortunate enough to serve as Grand Marshall of the CFD parade in 1998. Some of his duties while volunteering included working on wagons as a wagon doctor, helping with the barricade truck, and putting up parade route signs. Sammy was the lead parade coordinator at the corner of 24th and Capital Avenue. Additionally, Sammy worked with the bomb squad to signal the beginning of the parade and Star-Spangled Banner at the rodeo. After the completion of the Star-Spangled Banner he loved to take least one friend or family member up to the VIP deck to watch the first section of bulls. He was tireless as a volunteer, seldom missing a workday. Fellow volunteers have said that he was a “true testament to the volunteer force that keeps Cheyenne Frontier Days strong.” The McInerneys have been involved with CFD since its inception. Sammy’s maternal grandfather, John A. Martin, was Secretary of the CFD committee in 1897. He served on the CFD committee from 1901-1903 and again in 1905. Sammy’s father John J. McInerney served on the General Committee from 1916-1918 and was Treasurer from 1916-1917 and General Chairman in 1918. CFD held a special place in Sammy’s heart. He truly loved Cheyenne Frontier Days and that passion has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. Two of Sammy’s sons are heavily involved CFD as members of the Grounds Committee. Bill was elected to HEELS in 2001 and just completed his term as the Grounds Chairman. Tim was elected to HEELS in 2002. They hope their sons will follow in their footsteps.
