Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce
The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce was formed 100 years ago in 1907, in response to the struggles of Frontier Days. An association called the Frontier Park Association had run the event for several of the early years, but ultimately chose to dissolve in 1906 and wanted to offer the celebration to anyone willing to assume its operation. A.J. Vance, president of the local Board of Trade, suggested that Cheyenne needed a commercial club to run the event. This club would be independent of political influence and underwritten by businessmen. The Industrial Club, later named the Chamber of Commerce, was formed and committees were assigned to produce the 1907 celebration. For the next 84 years, the Chamber of Commerce and Cheyenne Frontier Days™ would work together as one organization, creating the “Daddy of ‘em All”. After the 1907 celebration, the Pioneer Park location was abandoned and replaced by a grandstand and supporting facilities at Frontier Park. Bob Hanesworth, the manager of the Chamber of Commerce from 1924 to 1950, also served as the executive for Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and was considered the ‘go to’ guy for CFD. Over the years, a new grandstand, the campgrounds, Frontier Village, Chuckwagon races and a healthy volunteer base are just a few of the projects developed during the Chamber’s history with this event. Since separating in 1991, the two organizations have continued to work together closely, with the CFD General Chairman serving as an ex-officio member on the Chamber board. The Chamber continues to provide visitor support and works diligently on community changes which enhance Cheyenne Frontier Days™ for thousands of visitors every year.
