F.E. Warren Air Force Base
The men of Battery A of the 76th Field Artillery at Fort D.A. Russell helped open the first Cheyenne Frontier Days™ in 1897 with a cannon blast that announced the opening festivities and closed the celebration with a military band that played for the excursion trains leaving for Denver that evening. Cementing the relationship between F.E. Warren AFB and Cheyenne Frontier Days™, the military continued to be active in the “Daddy of ‘em All” by participating in parades, Calvary formations, reenactments of battles and in marching bands. 1953 brought the first public appearance of the USAF Thunderbirds, the Air Force aerial demonstration team. This precision team has performed for the public at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ every year since. F.E. Warren’s year-round involvement includes hundreds of volunteers who flip pancakes, take tickets, work the grandstand and operate food booths on the midway. Base volunteers have also provided flatbeds for floats, arena medical personnel, security personnel, parking and grounds personnel and much more. The Base organizes and promotes a yearly buffalo barbeque, a historic homes tour, and Coronation Ball to introduce Miss Frontier and her Lady in Waiting to the world.
