The Powers Family

The Powers family spent many years and many generations working to make Cheyenne Frontier Days™ the “Daddy of ‘em All”. Each member of the family and many of the extended family have participated as ushers, riders in the parade, volunteers at the rodeo, at the CFD Old West Museum and behind the scenes to make the rodeo and the celebration its best. Tom Powers, Sr. was an active CFD volunteer for many years. His wife, Ruth, was active in the W-Heels organization and with the CFD Old West Museum where she worked with the costumes that became the basis for the Museum’s clothing collection. She was also on the committee for the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ cookbook. Their son, Tom Powers was Tickets Chairman from 1979 to 1981 and General Chairman from 1982 to 1983. During his tenure, he brought about the select-a-seat computerized ticket selling system, the first chili cook-off and booked the Southern Plains Indian dancers who replaced the Sioux dancers. His wife, Peggy, helped to enact the CFD Memorial Scholarship Fund after his death. His sister, Carol Powers Waeckerlin, was Miss Lady-in-Waiting in 1969 and Miss Frontier in 1970 and is active with the W-Heels organization. She served on the Board of the CFD Old West Museum and as a volunteer with the clothing collection. Her sister Patricia Powers Trelease Kennedy is active in the W-Heels and achieved “fifth-wheel” status (a volunteer of over 25 years) in 1996. Tom Sr.’s brother, Jim Powers, was Tickets Chairman from 1948 to 1951 and General Chairman in 1952 and 1953. During this time, the pancake breakfasts came to be a part of Cheyenne Frontier Days™. He also brought Chuckwagon racing to CFD in 1952. His son, J. Michael Powers is an active volunteer and was made a member of the HEELS organization in 1971. Granddaughter Tammy Powers was Miss Frontier in 1989. Like many families in the region, the Powers family spent countless hours and energy devoted to making Cheyenne Frontier Days™ a bigger and better celebration each year.
