The Hirsig Family

Brothers Charlie and Fred Hirsig came to Wyoming in 1889. Settling in Cheyenne, they worked on various area ranches until they bought two adjoining spreads, the Polo and Happy Jack Ranches, both west of Cheyenne. Both Charlie and Fred became actively involved in the found and progression of Cheyenne Frontier Days™, providing stock and services to the rodeo. Charlie served as Arena Director and General Chairman. Fred assisted in the arena, served on the committee and judged the 1905 rodeo. Fred and his wife Mary had five children: Mark, Fred Jr. (Beany), Willis, Charles William II and Mary Ida. Continuing the tradition of active involvement in CFD™, Willis served as committee treasurer, Grounds Chairman and worked with his brother Beany in the arena. Beany was the Arena Director until 1957. Each one of the children volunteered for the rodeo in some capacity. Beany and his wife Isabel had two children, Margy and Charles, known to everyone as Buddy. Both children helped in the arena. Margy was crowned Miss Frontier in 1954 and Buddy served as Arena Director for 37 years, starting in 1958. Margy’s daughter, DeeAnn Wilson, won over $700 in barrel racing on a horse raised by the family. Buddy and his wife Glenna had three children, continuing the tradition of active CFD™ volunteers. Glenna is a member of the W-Heels, caring for carriages and riding in the parades. Their daughters, Debby and Sandy, were both members of the Dandies and the Color Guard. Sandy was named Lady-in-Waiting in 1979, but due to a tragic car accident that took her life, the honor of Miss Frontier was not to be realized. Tom, a PRCA steer roper, took over the duties of Arena Director in 1992. He was named Contestants Chairman in 2001, and served until 2003. In 2002, he won the Steer Roping Championship at CFD™, the first Cheyenne native CFD™ volunteer and committee chairman to not only compete, but win. The Hirsig family, spanning four generations of active involvement in CFD™, has spent over 100 years perpetuation the tradition of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and their love of rodeo.
