Turk Greenough
A “cowboy’s cowboy,” Turk Greenough began competing in Cheyenne in the late 1920s. He won his first Cheyenne Frontier Days™ championship in 1933 in bronc riding. As an exhibition in the 1933 celebration, Turk Greenough took on the famed Midnight on the horse’s last day in rodeo. Greenough lost the stirrup, and Midnight successfully bucked him off. 1935 and 1936 brought two more championship bronc riding titles to his cred. A very popular cowboy, Turk came back to Cheyenne in 1943 while he was in the service to help judge the rodeo. He met and married Sally Rand, the famous fan dancer, although the marriage didn’t last long. To augment his rodeo winnings, the tall, handsome Turk worked in Hollywood as a stuntman and extra. He quickly made friends with John Wayne, Howard Hughes and Rex Allen. After retiring from rodeo, he found work in Las Vegas as a greeter in the hotels and later served in their security force. He died May 30, 1995 in a nursing home in Sheridan, Wyoming.
