Tad Lucas

Her first competition in 1917 began a long career in rodeo for a cowgirl from Nebraska. After turning pro in 1922 Tad Lucas went on to capture virtually every major prize offered to women in bronc riding trick riding and relay racing. Coming to Cheyenne in 1925 Tad returned most years until the 1940s winning the trick riding championship six times and capturing the Ladies Relay Race in the both 1930 and 1931. When she wasn’t competing Tad would perform exhibition rides for mount money. Her 1940 appearance at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ saw her enter the Ladies Bronc Riding where each entrant was to be paid $25.00 for a best ride. Tad along with two other cowgirls entered the competition. The birth of her daughter Mitzi did not slow down her career. She introduced her baby to the rodeo world riding around the area with the baby in her hat. At the age of eight (and twice more in her teens) Mitzi performed with her mother trick riding in Cheyenne.
