Mabel Strickland

Considered one of the true ladies of rodeo Mabel Strickland had the ability style and showmanship to be able to rope and ride steers bronc ride trick ride and race horses. After her marriage to Hugh Strickland the pair traveled the rodeo circuit together and in 1922 Mabel won the Denver Post Relay Race and the McAlpin Trophy (for All Around Cowgirl) in Cheyenne. In 1923 she repeated her relay race win and added women’s saddle bronc riding champ to her credits. In 1924 and 1925 Mabel Strickland was the only cowgirl ever to be featured on the cover of a Cheyenne Frontier Days™ souvenir program. In 1925 at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ she roped and tied a steer in 24 seconds breaking the world record.
