Lane Frost
The middle son of Clyde and Elsie Frost, Lane was raised in a rodeo family and started riding calves by age 10. His career took off when he won the Bull Riding Championship at the National High School Rodeo Finals in 1981. After his marriage to barrel racer Kelly Kyle, Lane continued his rodeo career, highlighted by the title of 1987 PRCA Champion Bull Rider of the World. His career took a turn for the worse in early 1989. After many tough rodeos, Lane needed to ride well at Cheyenne that year. Lane scored an 86 on July 27th, his best ride of the year. That propelled him into the top ten and the Sunday Finals. With a muddy arena to deal with, it would prove to be rough on all of the cowboys. The second to last bull rider, Lane came out of the chute on “Taking Care of Business,” number 7. He scored an 85 on that ride, doing everything right and winning almost $4,000. After 8 seconds, Lane was thrown over the bull’s shoulder and into the mud. The bull turned, dipping one of his horns towards the ground, hitting Lane in the back. This broke several ribs, one of which severed a major artery. Frost stood, motioning to the EMTs for help, before he collapsed and died on the arena floor.
