Billy Etbauer
Billy Etbauer is an Oklahoma rodeo legend. He received his PRCA card in 1988 and has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 21 times, winning 51 rounds in Saddle Bronc Riding and is a five-time world champion. Despite his obvious success, a win at Cheyenne was not an easy task. In fact, a title at the Daddy of ‘Em All took Billy 20 years to capture. It was Final Sunday in 2009 and Billy was tied for second in the average. Moments before riding, Billy watched three-time NFR qualifier Chet Johnson tie a 130-year old record with a 90-point ride. The pressure was on. Billy drew Painted Valley, a well-known and highly decorated bucking horse owned by Kirsten Vold. Billy had the ride of his life. Scoring 89 points, he edged out Chet Johnson by just two points in the average to take home the win and was able to finally fill the empty space in his trophy case with the iconic Cheyenne buckle. That buckle was the real goal for Billy, but the $14,718 purse that came with it moved him up to 14th in the 2009 PRCA World Standings and sent him on his way to a record 21 consecutive NFR qualifications. The ride on Painted Valley in Cheyenne has been immortalized in a photograph by Dan Hubble as well as a bronze sculpture made by Tony Chytka. Hubble’s photograph has been used as marketing material by Boot Barn and seen by thousands. Billy has been inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2012. He and his wife currently reside in Oklahoma where they raise quarter horses.
